Openworked Wooden Box Tree-Rings:NENRIN

We created “Nenrin,” a wooden box, which was made of Akita cedar wood, especially a straight grain board of it, grown in one of the three most beautiful forests in Japan, so that you can enjoy feeling light or scent. Akita cedar has been valued as a high-quality material for wooden boxes since ancient times. The cedar tree used for “Nenrin” box is more than 100 years old, and has straight grain and even tree-ring widths.

We think that a box has a power to keep memories and thoughts. Even after all the sweets were taken out of the box or the flowers delivered in it withered, the afterglow of the event is still in it. The presence of the box itself has meaning. When you put an LED light in the box, the warm light will melt your heart, and when putting a few drops of aroma oil, the mild scents will make you feel relaxed. Also, when putting a small speaker, the soft sound will reach you.

There are two types of tree rings, the light-colored rings and the dark rings. The light-colored ring is a soft portion that grew in the hot summer season and the dark ring is a hard portion that grew in the cold winter season. We carved the soft portions while leaving the hard portions by the skills for openwork. The tree rings add beautiful shadows on the surface of the box.

The openwork processing is made by hand one at a time with the special machine. No two grain patterns are the same. “Nenrin” box is one and only even though the openwork patterns are alike.　Usually, wooden boxes are used as a supporting role. But we’d like to get more people interested in the natural functionality and the warmth of wood, the beauty of the wood grain, and the skills for making boxes. That’s why we challenged to make the wooden box playing a starring role, that is, “Nenrin.”
